The trial of André Rives, an 81-year-old hunter, begins in Foix, Ariège, for killing the protected bear Caramelle during a 2021 boar hunt. Rives claims self-defense. Fifteen other hunters face charges for various hunting infractions. The case has reignited tensions between hunters and conservationists in the region. The two-day trial will address the future of cohabitation between hunters and bears in the Pyrenees.
